Corvo Island is the smallest island in the Azores. The island covers an area of 17.13 km², and is 6.5 km long and 4 km wide. It only has one small village, inhabited by less than 400 people (data from 2021).
Despite its small size, it is a GORGEOUS island and its inhabitants are very friendly, so if you are visiting the island of Flores, which is only 13 miles away, I highly recommend that you also visit Corvo! :)

Things nobody tells you about Corvo Island
- Most people visit Corvo as a day trip from Flores island. From Flores it is easy to travel to Corvo. The hard part is getting to Flores island. So I highly recommend you read my guide on How to get to Flores island.
- Many times the flights and boats to Corvo Island are delayed or even cancelled due to bad weather. Therefore, don’t plan your trip too tightly and admit that there is the a possibility that you won’t be able to get to Corvo Island at all. Or, reversely, that you will have to stay overnight. Therefore, make sure to also read my article about Where to stay in Corvo Island.
How to get to Corvo Island by BOAT
There are basically two ways to get to Corvo Island by boat. You can either:
- Join a group Corvo Boat Trip and Island Sightseeing Tour. I think this is a very interesting option because, in addition to taking you to Corvo Island, the skipper of the boat will also shows you the fantastic caves, waterfalls and islets of the Flores island on the way :) You will also get the chance of meeting like-minded travellers, which is great.
Price: €58/person
Departure time (from Flores): 9am
Departure time (from Corvo): 3pm
Book your group Corvo Boat Trip and Island Sightseeing Tour as it gets sold out super fast (it’s a tiny boat!). - The other option is to take a speedboat with Atlântico Lines, the ferry company that makes the boat connections between the different Azorean islands.
This option is cheaper but, of course, the boat driver will not show you the various points of interest on Flores Island, nor will he talk to you about dolphins and whales. It is, exclusively, a transport service between islands.
Price: €30/person (round trip)
Departure time: it depends a lot on the time of year! For example, at the time I’m writing this article (early October 2024), there are only two boats from Flores do Corvo per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, leaving Flores Island at 10am and 5pm. However, Atlântico Lines changes its schedules every two months, so you’ll need to check their website closer to your travel date.
How to get to Corvo Island by PLANE
The first thing you should know is that the only direct flights to Corvo Island depart from other Azorean islands. In other words, it is not possible to travel directly to Flores Island without being in the Azores, not even from Lisbon or Porto (the main Portuguese cities, in mainland Portugal).
There are currently two islands with direct connections to Corvo Island:
Direct Flights to Corvo Island (CVU)
- Horta, Portugal (Faial Island)
- Airport: Horta Airport (HOR)
- Airlines: SATA Air Açores
- Duration of the flight: 50 minutes
- Santa Cruz das Flores, Portugal (Flores Island)
- Airport: Flores Airport (FLW)
- Airlines: SATA Air Açores

How to get around the Corvo island
Corvo Island is REALLY small and you will probably only explore it on a day trip from Flores Island, so you don’t need to rent a car :) In fact, to be honest, I don’t even know if it’s possible to rent a car on the island.
But you don’t need one either: what you’ll do on the island is either explore one of its two fantastic hiking trails, or walk around Vila do Corvo. And you don’t need a car for either of them.
As soon as you arrive at the port of Corvo Island (which, by the way, is right next to the airfield) you’ll see some taxi vans that can take you to Caldeirão on Corvo Island. The trip costs €10 per person (round trip). From there, you have two options:
- either take the PRC02 COR Caldeirão, which is a circular trail, and at the end take the taxi back to the port.
- or take the PR01 COR Cara do Índio trail, which starts in Caldeirão and ends in the village of Corvo. In this case, you won’t need transport to return to the village, as you’ll be walking the route :)
