First things first: do you really need to stay in Corvo Island? I am saying this because, in case you haven’t noticed it yet, Corvo Island is MINUSCULE and you can cover most of the best things to do in the island on a day or two.
Don’t get me wrong: I do love Corvo (it is one of my favourite island in the Azores!), but most people visit it as a day trip from Flores island.
I think you should stay in Corvo island on one of these situations:
- if you are planning yo do some proper birdwatching in Corvo, as it is one of the best islands to do so.
- If you want to explore Corvo Island at your own pace – it’s definitely worth it, because the people of Corvo are very friendly!
- if you enjoy some proper solitude and wilderness :)
Let’s then explore where to stay in Corvo Island!
What to expect from your accommodation in Corvo island
- There are very few hotels on the island, so the hotels are a little more expensive than usual (but nothing out of this world). They get sold out with MONTHS in advance – so make sure to make your reservation as soon as possible!
- It is normal, especially during high season, for hotels to require a minimum stay of 2 nights.
- Corvo Island is VERY small, VERY isolated and has regular supply problems. So don’t expect very full breakfasts – remember where you are!
- It is very, VERY common for flights to and from Corvo Island to be delayed or even cancelled due to bad weather. So I recommend that you book accommodation with the most flexible cancellation policy possible.
Where to stay in Corvo island
Joe & Vera’s Vintage
Joe & Vera’s Vintage is my first choice of where to stay in Corvo Island. It is a small hotel in a very good location, a 5-minute walk from Corvo airport.
The rooms are simple but very clean and tastefully decorated, with feminine touches that make you feel immediately more at home. The beds are comfortable and, after 22h (when the church bell stops ringing), it is quite quiet.
One thing I really liked is that every guest gets a box with salami/pastrami and cheese in the fridge, with the room number, on it and can take it. Basket with bread and coffee, milk and juice is for everyone in the fridge and on the table. All well organized, fresh and tasty. They even have Nespresso capsules, which was a treat!
The owners of Joe & Vera’s Vintage are very friendly and attentive, and will quickly put you in touch with local guides. In fact, one of the hotel owners, Mr Fernando, has a fleet of transport to Caldeirão and was essential in making our stay even more memorable. He was always very helpful, tireless and concerned about us.
Hotel Comodoro
Hotel Comodoro has much larger and more comfortable rooms than the photos might suggest. In addition, and despite the simplicity of the hotel, the bedrooms are well equipped with a TV with a wide range of channels, very effective air conditioning and Wi-Fi with excellent coverage. Some of the rooms have amazing views of the mountains, local village, and sea, which may be to your liking.
Hotel Comodoro serves a varied breakfast with very long opening hours. On an island with few places to eat, this morning meal is strategically important. Moreover, right behind the hotel there is a famous food truck that sells hamburgers and hot dogs.
Last but not the least, Hotel Comodoro has a comfortable common living room, with plenty of books available for those who want to get to know the Azores better.
Joe & Vera’s Villa
A new accommodation has recently opened on Corvo island and I LOVE IT, because the truth is that I prefer to have an apartment to myself rather than sharing a kitchen and/or living room with other guests. So I am pleased to announce Joe & Vera’s Villas, small houses ideal for a couple.
Joe & Vera’s Villas are equipped with a flat-screen TV, a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge, a microwave, and a private bathroom with a shower and free toiletries. A stovetop and toaster are also available, as well as a coffee maker and kettle.
Note: although they can accommodate 4 people, please note that the “bedroom” is separated from the sofa bed (where the other two people sleep) by just an oilcloth curtain, so I DO NOT recommend Joe & Vera’s Villas for 2 couples, but rather for a family of 4.
Corvo camping park
If you are feeling adventurous or simply don’t want to spend ANY money, the best place to stay in Corvo Island is its camping park. It is free, it is quite new and the bathrooms are usually very clean.
There is also a barbecue area with shaded tables, which I found great. It has night lighting and, since recently, hot water. The toilets do not have soap or toilet paper, so bring your own. Oh, and needless to say, you will also need to bring your own tent and sleeping bags, as there is no one to rent them.
One downside to the park is that there is little protection from the wind and few shaded areas, so try to pitch your tent on the right side, under the trees, otherwise you will be exposed to the sun all day.
The location of the Corvo camping park is fantastic, right next to the only beach on the island, and you can enjoy a beautiful view of both the island’s volcano and the island of Flores, opposite.
At night, it is simply magnificent to fall asleep to the sound of shearwaters :’)
