For such a tiny island, Graciosa has a surprising number of great swimming areas. It only has one sandy beach but it has plenty of great natural pools that save the day on a hot summer. So with no further due, here’s my list of the best natural pools and beaches in Graciosa island in the Azores!
These are the best natural pools and beaches in Graciosa island:
Zona Balnear dos Poceirões (Poceirões Natural Pools)

Visiting the natural pools of Poceirões came highly recommended as one of the best things to do in Graciosa island — and it certainly did not disappoint!
Among the best natural pools and beaches in Graciosa island, the Poceirões swimming spot stands out with its two small volcanic rock basins. The shallower pool is ideal for toddlers, whereas the second basin caters to adults with its calm, sheltered waters—completely free of rough waves or Portuguese man o’ war, and filled with clear water, curious small fish, and crabs.
Because space to set down a towel is extremely limited, it is best to visit early in the day during peak summer to claim a spot. Keep in mind that access involves navigating a rather steep set of stairs, so it may not be suitable for small kids or visitors with mobility challenges.
Porto Afonso

Porto Afonso is an old fishing harbor built right into a bay of towering red volcanic cliffs. What makes it so special is its history: over the years, local fishermen actually carved hand-hewn caves and boat shelters straight out of the red rock face, turning the coastline into a stunning, rustic retreat.
It is a fantastic place to jump in for a peaceful, refreshing swim. While the water is usually crystal-clear, keep in mind that you might occasionally run into drifting clouds of seaweed—a phenomenon that has become increasingly common all around the Azores due to climate change.
Local tip: If you are driving down, the access road gets quite steep. As soon as the ocean comes into view and you spot a dirt parking lot on your right, pull over and park there—it is much safer and easier to walk the final stretch down to the water.
Praia de São Mateus (Graciosa’s Sand Beach)

If you’re traveling around the Azores, hitting Praia de São Mateus—or Praia da Praia, as locals call it—feels like striking gold. Soft, light sand is almost impossible to find on these volcanic islands, so being able to walk right into the water without destroying your feet on jagged lava rock is amazing.
The water here is super calm and noticeably warmer than other spots on Graciosa because the bay is so sheltered. It’s super laid-back, and during the summer, there’s actually a lifeguard on duty. You also get clean restrooms, changing rooms, and outdoor showers to wash off the sand. You won’t find a beach shack right on the sand, but you don’t need one—the beach is right in the village, so you can just walk a few steps to grab a cold drink or a quick bite at the local cafés.
The only real catch is that the sandy area is pretty small, so it fills up fast on sunny afternoons. Also, since it sits right next to the little fishing harbor, you’ll see boats coming and going. If you want a wild, secluded vibe, this isn’t it, but for a chill, easy beach day, it totally hits the spot.
Piscinas naturais do Carapacho (Carapacho Natural Pools)

Visiting the natural pools of Carapacho is easily one of my favorite things to do here! Formed by dark volcanic rock, these pools shield you from the rough open ocean waves so you can swim in total peace. There’s even a super calm, shallow basin right next to the main area that’s ideal for little ones.
It’s definitely top-tier when looking for the best beaches and swimming pools in Graciosa, so if you want to claim one of those awesome wooden sun loungers facing the water, try to head down earlier in the morning.
When you get hungry, pop right next door to Termas do Carapacho — the local thermal bath facility. You don’t need a spa booking to visit; their on-site café is open to everyone and makes a perfect spot to grab a light lunch between swims!
Zona Balnear do Barro Vermelho (Barro Vermelho Natural Pools)

Located right next to the airport, Zona Balnear do Barro Vermelho is hands-down one of the best natural pools in Graciosa if you’re looking for a convenient swim the second your flight touches down!
It’s essentially a scenic bay lined with volcanic pebbles, complete with about ten wooden lounge chairs that make it a super romantic spot for couples to relax. While there’s no lifeguard on duty—honestly, the waters are gentle enough that you won’t miss one—the setup here is surprisingly well-equipped. You’ll find a chill beach bar, restrooms with showers, a shaded picnic area, and even a small playground if you’re traveling with kids.
It’s an absolute must-visit if you’re staying nearby in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, or if you just want to kick off your trip with a quick ocean dip before even checking into your hotel.
Zona Balnear da Calheta (Calheta Natural Pools)

Zona Balnear da Calheta is a hidden gem tucked away in the little village of Calheta on the island’s eastern coast. If you want a cool, quiet spot to swim without the summer crowds, this place is awesome.
Instead of sand, you’re swimming off a dark volcanic rock shoreline, but they’ve built concrete platforms and stairs that make hopping into the ocean super easy. The water here is amazingly clear and very calm, making it a great spot to throw on a snorkel and look for fish.
You won’t find a beach bar or anything like it, but the local café in the village is just a short walk away if you need an ice cream or an espresso.
The only real downside is that there isn’t much space to lie down, so you’ll be setting your towel on concrete or flat rock rather than soft ground. But if you just want a quick, refreshing dip in crystal-clear water with a super local vibe, Calheta is well worth a stop.
